Tree of Life

In Jewish tradition the tree of life — etz chaim — is most familiar from the verse sung as the Torah is returned to the ark: "She is a tree of life to those who hold fast to her." The phrase names the Torah itself, and the image has come to stand for rootedness, growth, and a life nourished by something older than ourselves. Even the wooden rollers a Torah scroll is wrapped around are called atzei chaim — trees of life.
